Satisfaction by being a Health Volunteer with the Peace Corps!
Are you looking for a different way to share
your knowledge and expertise in health related fields, all
while living and working in a developing nation? Peace Corps
may be the answer. Founded by President John F. Kennedy,
the Peace Corps was created to provide education and technical
training to citizens of other countries and to foster cross
cultural exchange. Since 1961, over 190,000 Volunteers have
served in 139 countries around the world. Peace Corps is
looking for volunteers to work in the areas of health education,
HIV/AIDS education and awareness, or water sanitation.
Peace Corps Volunteers work on health projects providing
maternal and child health services, nutrition and hygiene
messages, support at community clinics, and education about
prevention of infections and vaccine-preventable diseases
as well as working on HIV/AIDS education and awareness projects.
Volunteers also help expand access to clean water and improve
sanitation by advising communities how to build and maintain
wells and latrines. In helping communities take more responsibility
for their own healthcare, Volunteers work to ensure the
sustainability of their projects.
The majority of Volunteers serving in health programs have
a bachelor's degree (any discipline) and experience in health-related
activities. Applicants with the most success have degrees
in health education, nutrition, dietetics, or another health-related
discipline. Some applicants have a master's degree in public
health, and some are registered nurses, physician's assistants,
counselors, or teachers.
Peace Corps is a 27-month commitment and provides a living
allowance, full medical and dental care, transportation
to and from the assigned country, as well as readjustment
funds on completion of service. Volunteers must be at least
18 years old, in good health, and US citizens. There is
no upper age limit for Volunteers.
