Program Description

Pain transmission and processing occurs in the peripheral and central nervous system.1 Acute pain serves as a warning to prevent damage.2 Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists beyond acute pain or beyond the expected time of normal healing.3 This presentation will review pain pathways in the peripheral and central nervous system and the mechanisms leading to the development of chronic pain.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic and specific anxiety disorder with a fluctuating course. It is often associated with significant functional impairment. GAD is underrecognized, which may be due, in part, to the complexity of patient presentation. Goals for the treatment of GAD include both symptom and functional improvement. During this presentation, the speaker will discuss the importance of screening for GAD and highlight some specific assessment and treatment considerations.
